Truck Bed Sizing

Bed Sizing:

These are a good rule of thumb for full-size trucks. Mid-size trucks might need something even narrower, shorter, or with a unique frame width or headache rack height, which can be available via special order.

Bed Widths:

  • Single Rear Wheel Trucks take a 7’ or 84” wide bed
  • Dual rear wheel trucks take an 8’ or 96” wide bed
  • Brand to Brand can vary a few inches
  • Some cab & chassis dually trucks take a slightly narrower bed, 90”-94”

Bed Lengths:

  • Short bed trucks (6’6” approximate factory bed size), take a 7’ or 84” long bed
  • Long bed trucks (with an 8’ approximate factory bed size, excludes cab & chassis), take an 8’6” or 102” long bed
  • Cab & Chassis trucks (came from the factory as a cab & chassis, not a box delete). Depending on the cab to axle measurement beds are 9’4”, 11’4”, or even longer on some trucks. See next section for sizing

Cab to Axle Measurements:

  • ALWAYS get a measurement, it is better to spend more time up front, than to get a wrong bed!
  • Especially important if you are doing a skirted bed, the wheel-well in the bed directly corresponds to the cab to axle measurement!
  • 38”: Short bed Dodge/Ram, Nissan, or Toyota
Corresponds to a 7’ bed length
  • 40”: Short bed Ford
Corresponds to a 7’ bed length
  • 42”: Short bed GM
Corresponds to a 7’ bed length
  • 56”: Long bed GM
Corresponds to an 8’6” bed length
  • 58”: Long bed Ford or Dodge/Ram
Corresponds to an 8’6” bed length
  • 60”: Cab & Chassis Trucks
Corresponds to a 9’4” bed length
  • Some platform style or service body beds are available in a 10’ length
  • 84”: Cab & Chassis Trucks
Corresponds to an 11’4” bed length
  • Some platform style or service body beds are available in a 12’ length
  • Anything longer is non-standard, and will require a special-order truck bed
